In upstate New York, an entire region of the U.S. is being transformed by hydraulic fracing. The topic has become so intense it is making enemies out of former neighbors and friends. The state has 14,000 producing natural gas wells that sprang up in the Marcellus Shale because of fracing. Even though New York has not seen groundwater contamination due to fracing fluids, opponents are plenty. Congress has ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to study fracing. Hundreds of people in New York have shared their opinions about fracing at four public hearings.
