While oil-producing countries in the Middle East continue to be entrenched in turmoil, in late March President Obama announced a long-term goal to achieve energy independence. In a speech at Georgetown University, Obama said the need lias never been more urgent than now to push for energy security. His plan calls for boosting domestic oil and natural gas production starting as soon as possible. The long-term goal is to decrease foreign fuel oil imports by one-third by 2020. By 2025, his plan calls to cut oil imports to 7.25 million barrels a day.
