The present work evaluates the advantages of the electroslag strip cladding process versus the submerged arc strip cladding technique for the manufacture of pressure vessels of Cr-Mo steel with an overlay of Inconel. For this work a ER NiCr-3strip has been used as the filler metal and it has been deposited over the base metal by both processes. To compare both methods, the weld metal and the interphase have been mechanical, microstructural and chemical characterized. Other welding parameterslike consumables from different suppliers, time of post-welding heat treatment and weld current intensity have been used for the evaluation.One of the main problems, the manufacturer ran into during the cladding of Inconel over low-alloy steels, is to obtain a low Fe content. Due to the great dilution that involves the welding of dissimilar alloys, the challenge is to minimize this dilutionby processes, which need higher intensities.
