We Recognise Glugea anomala?. J.I.R. LARSSON, Department of Zoology, University of Lund, S-223 62 Lund, Sweden. Glugea anomala (Moniez, 1887) Gurley, 1893 is a common parasite of the three-spined stickleback, Gasterosteus aculeatus in brackish waters in Europe and probably all over the Holarctic. Recently Glugea atherinae Berrebi, 1978 has been synonymised with G. anomala, and it has been suggested that also Glugea gasterostei Voronin, 1974 and Glugea weissenbergi Sprague and Vernick, 1968 might be junior synonyms of G. anomala. If this is correct synonymy, apparent cytological differences and host differences between G. anomala sensu stricto and the other three Glugeo species will cause great problems with the recognition of the species G. anomala. An aberrant form of Glugeo anomala, or possibly a new species, occurs in Sweden. The spores are slightly greater than spores of G. anomala sensu stricto, and in addition to the dominant microspores a distinct fraction of macrospores is produced. The microsporidium induces great lobed xenomas, organised in the typical way for G. anomala.
