During the past 10 years, the broiler industry in Brazil has shown a significantly high growth rate with total output attaining 60 percent of the U.S. value by 2005. During 2006, exports are forecast at 2.85 million metric tons exceeding the 2.34 million metric tons shipped by U.S. integrators. Expansion had to be scaled back in 2006 as exports were impacted by a 13 percent decline in volume. This was due to a combination of an increase in the value of the Real against the U.S. dollar and decreased demand for processed poultry in traditional export markets where consumers were concerned over avian influenza.
