Bear Alert! - A LANDLOCKED POLAR BEAR RAISES AN ALARM

Dateline July 29, 2008. We are living in tents on the edge of the Arctic Ocean at Pitt Point, 60 miles from the nearest Alaskan village. Four days ago, the five of us—all WCS biologists—relocated our field camp here from an interior site on Teshekpuk Lake, 30 miles south. Moving from one remote place to another was no easy feat. The trip required multiple flights in a bush plane to ferry 3,000 pounds of personnel, gear, and supplies. This morning the sun is shining for only the second time since wearrived on the coast, and the fog bank that perpetually lurks offshore looks like it won't be landing for at least a few hours. On the Arctic Coast, dense fog can descend very quickly, reducing visibility to a couple hundred feet. Today, it's about as good as it's going to get to count birds.
