My father, John Frank Raw, was a competent, self-taught naturalist and gardener. His interest in natural history began very early. By the age of nine he had reference collections of common birds' eggs and butterflies. He was born in 1904 in Stockton-on-Tees, in 1916 the family moved to Middlesbrough and in August 1918 to Linthorpe (54°33'N; 1°15'W).
