The value of spent mushroom compost. It was a remark made in the Ralph Noble Profile (Mushroom Journal No. 661) that caught my attention. He was surprised that Spent Mushroom Compost (SMC) or Spent Mushroom Substrate (SMS) didn't have a greater marketvalue. Only a couple of years ago (Mushroom Journal 637. February 2003) I wrote about SMC, but then I was discussing waste recycling and, almost in passing, pointed out the many ways in which it can be utilised. Some eight or nine years ago I investigated mushroom substrate disposal (Mushroom Journal No. 563, 1996). I then suggested we found a better name for the material. Perhaps it is time for another look at the subject. The value of spent mushroom compost.
