The Golf R provides massive performance, superb traction and great handling capability, while remaining practical and fuel-efficient enough for everyday road use, in all weathers... WITH THE Mk 7 Golf almost upon us, due for UK launch early in January 2013, there's just time for a final review of a Mk 6 and what better than the ultimate Mk 6 Golf, the 270 PS 2.0-litre turbo-charged four-wheel-drive Golf R. Of course, many enthusiasts will rebuke Volkswagen for not having taken this concept one step further, and fitting the 340. PS turbo 5-cylinder engine which Audi has used in the TT RS and RS 3. It would have been a thoroughly realistic proposition, and the resulting 'Golf RS' would have been the perfect swansong for the model which, essentially, has been with us since 2003 in its original Mk 5 body style. But that, it seems, is not to be. It might not be quite the ultimate Golf it could have been, and now priced at nearly ￡34,000 for the top-of-the range five-door DSG, even before it is fitted with an assortment of optional extras, the Golf R is far from a cheap proposition. But, from our own experience of it and those of the many owners we've spoken to, the Golf R certainly fulfils its promise.
