Well, theories are fine, as far as they go, but this one seemed to warrant more solid investigation. So I decided to get hold of some sales figures from Volkswagen's Press Office, to see whether I could add some flesh to the theory. I must admit that I was a bit taken aback by the figures, even though they proved that I hadn't merely been the victim of misguided day-dreaming. Yes, the manufacturers' official sales tallies proved that the Golf GTI has definitely gone onto the back-burner, as a percentage of overall Golf sales. In the days of the Mk 4 Golf, the GTI accounted for a healthy 28.17% of all Golf sales. Now, with the launch of the Mk 5, that figure has slumped to 5,82%, a total which includes 0.33% of Edition 30 sales. Its a staggering drop, by any standards, and represents total sales of just 12,000 GTIs in a full year, on the British market.
