Well worthy of its European Car of the Year accolade, the new Passat provides enhanced prestige along with better performance, comfort and fuel efficiency, whichever specification you choose... ONLY RECENTLY announced as the winner of the European Car of the Year award for 2015, the new Passat was subject to high expectations as it arrived for a week-long road test in mid-March. We'd driven examples already, on the international press launch in Sardinia hack in early October 2014, and at a UK driving day in early January this year, both reported previously in our pages, but neither was extensive enough to do more than sample its abilities. Clearly, though, here's a car that is much improved over its already very competent predecessor. The eighth generation of saloon and estate cars to bear the name Passat, this latest model is significantly re-engineered, now based on the same MQB platform structure as the Mk 7 Golf. With the similar benefits of lighter and stronger construction techniques, new technologies, sharper and stronger styling inside and out, it also has a range of new engines with more power and better fuel economy.
