Cars from Volkswagen don't come any larger, or look more powerful, than the big V8 TDI-engined SUV... WHEN VOLKSWAGEN launched the Touareg in 2002, it was designed to stand up against the BMW X5 in terms of its behaviour on the tarmac, and rival the Range Rover off the road. That was the claim of the engineers and it proved to be pretty sound, although Land Rover, with plenty of justification, would suggest that the company's considerable off-road experience gives it an edge.
