The Technology of the V8 4.21 TDI Engine in the Audi Q7

With the Audi Q7, Audi entered into a new territory - as far as its own product range is concerned, but also in the market segment occupied by its competitors, who will now be confronted with a multifunctional vehicle with sporting dynamic characteristics, off-road capability and interior space such as the market has never seen before.It was no accident that the Audi Q7 was launched in 2005. This was the year in which Audi celebrated a quarter of a century of success with the Audi quattro technology. This permanent four-wheel-drive system is one of the powerful factors that justify the technological lead implied by the Audi brand's claim "Vorsprung durch Technik" [1].With this in mind, this impressive new Audi model had its premiere at the central event in the anniversary of "Audi quattro technology" at the "Audi quattro Night" 2005 in Ingolstadt.The focus of the development work of the Audi Q7 was on satisfying the customer's wishes and needs, by upholding typical Audi characteristics such as design, the use of aluminum [5, 6, 7, 9], expertise in aerodynamics, sophistication and ease of control, road dynamics, the quattro driveline, FSI and TDI engines.Audi is now presenting the V8 4.2 TDI engine (Figure 1), which was first launched in 2005 in the Audi A8, in the Audi QJ. This paper will present the technology of this V8 4.2 TDI engine in the Audi Q7 and the performance of the car.The V8 4.2 TDI engine is a consequently continued development of the V8 4.01 TDI engine which is only offered in the Audi A8 so far. The cylinder spacing has been enlarged from 88 to 90 mm and the injection system has been changed to Piezo-technology. TheEGR-system, the combustion and the turbo charging were further optimized. For the first time a double-flow particle filter application has been adapted. Additionally the engine weight could be reduced by 15 kg in comparison to the former V8 4.01 TDI engine in the Audi A8.The V8 4.2 TDI in the Audi Q7 has a power output of 240 kW and a torque of 760 Nm. Together with the (CSF) catalyst soot filters it complies with EU 4 emission limits. With this engine performance the Audi Q7 has a fuel consumption of 11.1 l/100 km, an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds and a top speed of 236 km/h.
