Plan to Salvage Oil from Leaking Tanker

Smit Salvage (Lars Walder, Zalmstraat 1, 3016 DS Rotterdam, P.O. Box 1042, 3000 BA Rotterdam, The Netherlands; Tel: +31 10 4549911, Fax: +31 10 4549777) is proposing a plan to the European Commission for the recovery of more than 60,000 tones of crude oil from the sunken Bahamian tanker Prestige to prevent further leakage to the ocean. The Prestige, which sank and split in half on November 19th, is lying on the floor of the Atlantic at a depth of about two miles, 125 miles off the Northwest coast of Spain. Although oil has never been recovered from a depth of more than a mile, Smit believes it is technically possible, but will be extremely difficult.
