Electronically Controlled Pneumatic (ECP) brake systems incorporate a two-conductor trainline cable carrying 230 VDC with Overlay Data communications that parallels Brake Pipe through the train. The pneumatics provides the 'muscle' while the electronics provide the communications and control. The key features of the ECP braking system are the continuous supply of reservoir pressure via Brake Pipe, Graduated Release and the simultaneous application/release of brake cylinder on each car. An added benefit with ECP is the ability to operate Wireline Distributed Power (WDP) through the trainline cable.
