摘要

Increasing graphical capabilities enable the development of much more sophisticated desktop virtual environments. Examples of their use include interactive games, training and modelling applications, and abstract data visualisations and representations. Desktop virtual environments are also used to support safety-critical displays, such as flight aviation displays, or to augment the two-dimensional video camera images in minimally invasive surgery. However, usability issues continue to arise, due to the properties of desktop virtual environments, where three-dimensional, interactive graphics are presented on a two-dimensional monitor. An individuals ability to accurately perceive and interact with, and within, desktop virtual environments may be affected by their physical views of the virtual environment, their interpretation of the visual stimuli and the manner by which they manoeuvre or are guided through the desktop virtual environment.
