The city of Philadelphia led the political, commercial, educational, and cultural development of the American nation. As the new nation began, Philadelphia was the largest English-speaking city in the world next to London and both the center of the government and the center of commerce. Not as widely recognized is Philadelphia's contribution to transforming America's stature from nineteenth century European apprentice to that of twentieth century worldwide leader in experimental scientific medical research and practice.
