Modern gas turbine - technology, risks and loss experience

Because of the continuing severe pressure caused by competition and overcapacity, the prices for new gas turbines have fallen by approximately one half in the last ten years. The manufacturers reacted to severe competition on the one hand through continuous technical development of their product range and, on the other, through optimising the business processes (outsourcing, rationalisation). For cost and time reasons, furthermore, there has been an increasing tendency to dispense with prolonged prototype tests before release to series production. The rapid technical development of gas turbines has led to a clear increase in the number of cases of large-scale damage.
