Optimal Grow-in: The Golf Club at Oxford Greens builds on successful establishment

In climatically challenged New England, it isn't often that you hear a superintendent say this about a grow-in: "The first seed hit the ground July 12 and conditions were optimal. We missed a lot of storms, which was beneficial; it was probably as good as you can get for a bentgrass grow-in." Bryan Harrington of The Golf Club at Oxford Greens in Oxford, Conn., knows how fortunate he was during the 2004 establishment of the Mark Mungeam-designed championship layout. "Some people may shy away from seeding in the middle of July and August," continues Barrington. "I feel that time of year you can get bentgrass to pop in three days, and as long as you stay on top of it you can keep it going. We had some good seeding weather; didn't get slowed down by any rainstorms once we got going. We were cruising."
