The effect of bulbs planting time and use of flat covers on growth and yield of shallot grown for the harvest with the fresh green shoots

Based on the research conducted in 1995-1999, yielding and growth of local population of shallot grown for spring harvest with green shoots was evaluated. The factors tested were planting time (autumn or spring) and short term flat covering of plantswith perforated PE film or non-woven polypropylene fabric. The best results were obtained with spring planting combined with covering plants with PE film or without cover. Use of non-woven fabric was not beneficial for shallot, and even some decrease inthe yield was observed compared to control. Weight of individual bulbs did not depend on planting date. Plants covered with perforated PE film or not covered had greater weight than plants covered with non-woven fabric. Number of descendant plants was not influenced by the examined factors. Mean number of plants in one cluster was 7.4.
