During 2013, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) laboratories recorded abomasal ulceration, with or without perforation, in 32 cattle on post-mortem examination.' While abomasal erosions are partial excavations throughthe depth of the mucosa, abomasal ulcers can be defined as an excavation in the abomasal mucosa that penetrates through the entire thickness of the mucosa and may extend through the submucosa, muscularis externa and serosa.2 Typically, abomasal ulcers are classified into one of four distinct categories, namely:
