To increase the profitability of the dairy industry as a whole, the target for 2020 is to have 75% of the milk supplied by farmers with a SCC of under 200,000 cells/ml.2The Irish national geometric mean bulk milk somatic cell count (BMSCC) was estimated at 250,937 cells/mL in 2004 and 281,000 cells/ml in 2011.As BMSCC increases, the volume of milk delivered decreases and milk solids per cow decreases. A recent study found that overall net-farm profit decreased by ?19,504 (from ELLER31,252 to ?11,748) for a 40ha farm as BMSCC increased from <100,000 cells/mLto >400,000 cells/ml (see Figure 1).
