TVI ISSUES AND SAFETY ON FARMS

Rom recent correspondence, it would appear that the gloves are now off in our fight to retain exclusive TVI meat inspection duties. That being said, we are well-positioned to defend ourselves, thanks to a lot of behind the scenes work carried out by HQ staff and our volunteers in the field. It will not be an easy fight but the rewards are significant and our position has to be defended to the last. Notwithstanding the imminent fight we, as a profession, have to recognise that we have no right to be the sole supplier of meat inspection services. We as a group have to earn that right and have to step up to the challenges ahead. We must be willing to change. We must be willing to give value for money and we must be willing to embrace new work practicesthat would allow the meat inspection service to enter the 21st century. Declaring that the service is too costly in the current environment is an opt-out position and belies the reality that our presence has served the meat industry and the farming community very well in the past and continues to do so. We will have to use all our powers of persuasion during the coming months to secure our position. I trust that all of you are up to the task ahead.
