During an orthopedic trauma, some veterinarians get so caught up in managing the broken bone that they miss important steps that can affect the outcome of the patient, say orthopedic surgeons. "Everyone gets excited because they see a broken bone on a radiograph, and they focus on that and forget the forest -- that the bones are connected to the rest of the dog -- and they don't stabilize the patients well," says Joseph Harari, DVM, MS, DACVS, of Veterinary Surgical Specialists in Spokane, Wash.
