Our clinic received a call about Missy, a 6-year-old German shepherd mix that had been fishing with her owner the previous evening. After Missy had raided the fishing line with hooks attached and chewed on fish bones, her owner noticed she was coughing, gagging and stretching her neck, so he brought Missy to the emergency clinic that night at around 11:00 PM. The emergency veterinarian found what appeared to be a bone caught in Missy's throat at the level of the hyoid apparatus. Radiographs could notconfirm whether the bone had entered the lumen of the trachea or esophagus or if it was embedded in the soft tissue of the neck. Missy was anesthetized, but the veterinarian was unable to find and remove the bone. Because Missy was stable, the owner took her home that evening and came to our clinic the next morning for a recheck.
