摘要

In an attempt to move toward sustainability and self-sufficiency with respect to organ donation and transplantation, nations must use a common framework and set of metrics. The goal of defining these metrics is that by doing so, a broader understanding of the gaps and issues facing different countries will be more apparent. Solution generation and dissemination may be facilitated if we start with a greater global understanding of the issues that currently exist. Organ transplantation is the part of a continuum of care and health, which commences with recognition of risk factors, documentation of chronic conditions, and management of end-stage organ failure, which includes identification of the optimal treatment of that organ failure. Thus, a better understanding of organ transplantation requires an appreciation of the interaction between population needs, healthcare systems, and the availability of living and deceased donors as a source of grafts.
