Struvite is a phosphate-rich mineral found in wastewater and when precipitated in anaerobic conditions can clog pipes, potentially causing serious and costly problems for the treatment plant. An effective way to avoid these problems is to remove the nutrients that cause struvite from wastewater and transform them into a granular fertilizer, Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies' nutrient recovery process precipitates the struvite from the wastewater resulting in a product called Crystal Green (5-28-0-10 Mg). Extensive data exists on the use of Crystal Green as a fertilizer in other potato-growing regions and further research is underway in North Dakota and Minnesota to understand how to optimize its management and use.
