THE period from January to March 2003 saw the start of the second Wirth IBM, Brunei, on the down line on Contract 240, the start of the down line Lovat IBM, Judy, on Contract 250 and the first two breakthroughs. However, it also saw the first and only major incident, an unexpected ground settlement, which caused a three-month delay in the up line drive on Contract 240. After the Christmas break the two Kawasaki TBMs for Contract 220 started where they left off before Christmas with the up line increasing it progress each month and achieving its best month in February of 775 m, before breaking through into the Graham Road shaft, after a drive of 3.2 km, on March 12, 2003. A full tool change on the cutterhead of the IBM, along with other refurbishment and maintenance, was carried out. The drive recommenced on March 28, 2003.
