THE 190 km-long Bothnia Line is the largest Swedish railway construction project for 50 years, and is the first to be built in accordance with the requirements of the. new environmental code. It will fill one of the major gaps in the Norrland coast main. line, serving a densely populated region of over 350,000 people, and halving current rail and bus travelling times. The line, apart from linking northern and southern Sweden, is also part of the European rail network that will eventually provide a high-speed link between the Barents Sea and the Black Sea. Construction commenced in 1998, with the 20 km-long Ornskoldsvik-Husum section, which features four tunnels and 25 bridges. The southernmost section is currently under construction from Nyland to Ornskoldsvik, featuring the two longest tunnels on the line, the 5.2 km-long Bjornbole and the 6 km-long Namntall tunnel, which are part of a 32 km-long railway section awarded to Skanska. The two tunnels are being constructed using drill and blast methods.
