摘要

Challenging mountainous terrain has been overcome and unmade roads upgraded in Uganda, east Africa, to improve connectivity for trade and tourists. Improvements to the 100km Kabale Kisoro highway in Uganda are said to have reduced journey times by 40% and boosted road safety. Construction of the £45M upgrade was completed in October 2012 after a five year build. Asphalt surfacing now runs for the entire route which connects with three neighbouring countries: Kenya, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. "There has been tremendous growth in agriculture, retail, urbanisation and tourism in Uganda since the project was completed," said project director Stephen Jones from consultant Mott MacDonald. The firm reviewed initial designs and supervised construction, which was carried out by contractor SBI International Holdings. The project's client was the Uganda National Roads Authority.
