New traffic signs policy will deliver clearer messages for local needs, says DfT

On 21 March, head of traffic signs policy at Department for Transport Graham Hanson is giving a lecture at CIHT on DfTs traffic signs policy review 'Signing the Way'. Here he outlines the key points to be explored. While the review confirmed that the existing sign system in Great Britain remains one of the best in the world, it is evident that the relationship between the highly regulated framework for signing (the Traffic Signs Regulations & General Directions - TSRGD) and the role of the practitioner needs to change, Graham Hanson writes. "For too long, traffic signing has often been an afterthought, only being considered towards the end of the traffic management scheme design process. Traffic signing needs to be considered as an integral part of the design process which can contribute to meeting wider transport objectives, including effective enforcement and improving the streetscape. Inadequate consideration leads to poor sign design and over provision of signing which can have a detrimental impact on road safety and the environment.
