摘要

Pedestrian crossings should provide more time to reach the other side of the road, for the benefit of older people, say Jennifer Mindell and Anna Collins. Walking impairments affect an alarming 84% of men and 93% of women aged 65 and over in the UK, according to a 2012 report by University College London. Average walking speed of the elderly, it says, is between 0.8 and 0.9 metres per second, compared with the speed required to use pedestrian crossings (1.2 metres per second or faster).
