Roads are just as safe today as they were 100 years ago. If current trends persist, fatalities will continue to follow a downward trend. Data from the Registrar General for England and Wales shows the number of deaths by various causes. Publication DH4 'Mortality statistics - Injury and poisoning' (Office for National Statistics, 2007) includes the number of deaths and the rate per million population from 1901 caused by transport accidents and, until 2000, by road accidents. This makes it possible to compare road safety today with road safety before motor vehicles.
