Sir Peter Baldwin KCB - a gentle eulogy

Sir Peter Baldwin - former Permanent Secretary at the Department of Transport, chairman of numerous charities and father of the Motorway Archive - died on 9 May 2010, aged 87. He was an extraordinarily competent and caring man, much beloved by all with whom he came into contact. Transportation Professional profiled Sir Peter around the time of the Motorway Archive's launch (June 2003) and his passing was marked by an excellent obituary in The Times (25 May 2010). On this page, alongside, can be read extracts from one of three eulogies delivered at a Thanksgiving service to mark Sir Peter's life, held at St Philip's Church, Burwash Weald in East Sussex. The words are of Ann Frye, his private secretary at the DoT and later co-worker, engaged on activity to assist the less than able bodied.
