Port access beefed up through Lancashire

Britain's first highway scheme to be approved through a new planning regime for projects of national strategic importance is making solid progress in Lancashire. Better and swifter connections between the M6 and the port of Heysham in Lancashire will come in a little over a year when work completes on a 4.8km long dual carriageway link. The road is a complex one to build, but also blazes a trail for other nationally significant infrastructure projects to follow. The Heysham to M6 Link was the first highway scheme - and the first local authority project - to have been considered by the Infrastructure Planning Commission (set up under the Labour Government, but since abolished) and granted consent under the Planning Act 2008.
