First Fruiting of Garcinia malaccensis in Cultivation in Indonesia

Garcinia malaccensis is a rare and wild species that is closely related and considered as one of the parents of the well-known mangosteen (G. mangostana). During 1997-2001 a number of specimens were discovered in the lowland forest of Sumatra. Materials were collected and then cultivated at the Lekarsari Fruit Garden in Bogor, West Java. The striking similarity of vegetative and fruit characteristics of G. malaccensis to those of G. mangostana opens the opportunity to breed new varieties, and the possibility of breeding this species with G. mangostana.
