A Case of Chemical Restraint

THIS is a case study illustrating the inappropriate use of antipsychotic medication to deliberately sedate a patient to produce a chemical restraint.The patient was an 80-year-old woman who sustained damage to the hippocampus region of the brain 2 years earlier, secondary to a drug-drug interaction. The patient did not suffer any paralysis but did experience severe short-term memory loss. The patient's medical history was significant for hypertension, high cholesterol, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and spinal stenosis. Prior to this infarction, the patient was active, playing golf and tennis several times a week.
