The Use of Probiotic Saccharomyces boulardii tor Diarrhea Management

The utilization of probiotics is growing in clinical practice for treatment of diarrhea and other mal-absorptive conditions. When using probiotics patients must be treated with the strain and dose that has been used in research on the basis of the disease state. The nonpathogenic probiotic yeast Saccharomyces boulardii, given in a dose of 2g/d, shows promising results for treating antibiotic associated diarrhea and recurrent Clostridium difficile disease. Risk factors such as immunosup-pression or the presence of a central venous catheter must be considered when incorporating all probiotics especially Saccharomyces boulardii.
