The concept of plant health care (PHC) evolved from integrated pest management employed in agriculture. IPM utilizes a monitor technician to periodically inspect plants and to implement cultural, biological and/or chemical treatments to maintain pests below an economic injury level (the threshold where the monetary damage caused by a pest exceeds the cost of control). This economic injury level helps guide decisions for implementing control strategies in agriculture.
