Plasma transfusion: Current status and future directions

We are pleased to serve as invited guest editors for this TRANSFUSION supplement that honors the 75th anniversary of the first US hospital blood bank established by Dr Bernard Fantus at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. Dr Fantus first coined the term "blood bank" and established an operating blood bank on March 15, 1937. This supplement describes the current status and future directions of the clinical use of plasma components. Without the vision of Dr Fantus, inventory and usage of this blood component may never have taken place. And yet, transfusion of this component often generates more controversy than nearly any other component.
