Patients may present with hemodynamic instability or autonomic dysfunction, creating an unpredictable course. Keen observational skills are required to detect and correct fluid and electrolyte shifts or subtle changes in the patient's condition. The confused or obtunded patient is unable to communicate symptoms related to citrate toxicity so the nurse must rely on other assessment parameters in order to prevent complications.
