Transfusion in military and civilian trauma and major haemorrhage

We are very fortunate to have a series of linked editorials, reviews and articles in this issues that describe and review modern practice in transfusion for major haemorrhage in the military and civilian spheres and also the application of massive transfusion protocols to patients with extensive bleeding from non-traumatic causes. This is a fitting series of articles as it reflects the evolution of transfusion practice through the application of lessons learnt in the, treatment of casualties from military action, specifically the steady improvement of resuscitation techniques to very seriously injured military personnel, to civilian trauma and a widening spectrum of surgical, obstetric and medical scenarios.
