The chance to serve on operational deployments is often cited by military doctors as a leading reason for their joining the military. More often than not military doctors now work within NHS departments often at a distance from the soldiers, sailors and airmen they joined up to work for. An operational deployment brings them back to the sharp end, a chance to reconnect with the military environment and put the skills learnt at home and on previous deployments into practice in difficult and challenging situations.
