Today's induction power supplies, approaching 20 MW in size and able to apply 1000 kW per ton into the furnace charge, are challenging arc furnaces and cupolas as primary melters in large melt shops. And with the recent availability of power units able to supply power to multiple furnaces simultaneously, foundries are now able achieve production levels and operational flexibility not previously available with any type of melting equipment: induction, arc or cupola. These powerful induction units create new requirements for furnaces engineered to handle high-power densities, for automated charging systems that can keep pace with rapid melting and for versatile melt control technology able to harness the power. This paper examines all of these new melt shop technologies.
