ARNHEM LAND ESCAPE

Ever adventurous DICK EUSSEN escapes from the maddening crowds to remote Arnhem Land and fishes the Liverpool River and the blue waters of the Arufura Sea. I love the central Arnhem Land coastal region, especially the wilderness that surrounds the Liverpool River. I first fished there in 1978 and did a few trips during the 1980s when I lived in Jabiru, The Liverpool is one of the largest rivers to flow out of the Arnhem Land Escarpment to the north. Its tidal reach is over 70km in length, and its estuary excited sea/land explorer Lt. Phillip Parker King, Australia's first born surveyor and naval officer, who believed it led inland to the inland sea that was thought to be in the continent's interior King, commander of the cutter HMC Mermaid, named the Liverpool River on the 8 August 1818. He also named Haul Round Island, 10km north from the mouth, and Entrance Island.
