After months of south-easterly winds blowing, it looked like the wind would drop at the end of the week, making an overnight camp at Fitzroy Island a possibility. Fitzroy Island is a mainland island, (as opposed to a coral atoll), and is quite close to the coastline just south-east of Cairns Harbour. For small boats and family fishing, it presents a great place to camp and as a base for fishing the nearby reefs. While it is not the greatest anchorage in the world, it does provide some shelter from the south-easterlies should they spring up and as the large tourist boats visit on a regular basis, this gives you some confidence that you can get back to civilisation in a hurry if you need to. The Cairns Council camping ground is great to set up overnight tents and a restaurant at the resort provides meals if you do not want to cook yourself.
