Is the CRTN Method Reliable and Accurate for Traffic Noise Prediction in Hong Kong?

Although its accuracy has been challenged, the Calculation of Road Traffic Noise (CRTN) prediction method, which originated in the United Kingdom, retains its position as the sole instrument for traffic noise estimation in Hong Kong. This study examines the accuracy and suitability of the CRTN model for roads in Hong Kong by comparing the predicted values and the actual measured traffic noise level LA 10. Twenty-nine measurements were conducted in 16 locations in Hong Kong. The results show that the CRTN model could predict the traffic noise level accurately with a mean difference between the predicted and measured LA 10 of +0.4 dB(A) A correlation coefficient (R{sup}2) of 0.7742 indicates that the predicted noise levels correlate closely with the measured levels. Comparisons between the CRTN model and other regression models proposed by local researchers were also made. The results further affirm that the CRTN model remains a most reliable prediction model for Hong Kong.
