Probabilistic analysis for the reduction in cross-section area of bored piles with defects

Occurrence of minor defects in a bored pile is modeled as the outcome of random event. It is possible to accurately estimate the defed rate based on the evidence of the vertically taken core samples. The reduction in cross-section area of the bored pile can be calculated for given confidence levels. Reduction curves are plotted for a number of representative cases commonly found in Hong Kong.
