Fully optimizing architectural coatings to maximize applied hiding

The architectural coatings market continues to develop higher performing paints to meet consumer demands of appearance, performance, and easy application to obtain a smooth, uniform finish with a minimum number of coats. A common theme in roller application is a hiding requirement that spans the skill level of the painter. In white and pastel paints, maximizing applied hiding involves two formulation steps: 1) use of polymeric hiding technologies to help optimize the intrinsic hiding and 2) use of high performance rheology modifiers to help deliver optimum application performance and transfer as much of the intrinsic hiding to the substrate. Making the most of each key raw material, titanium dioxide, polymeric hiding technologies and rheology modifiers, is crucial to enhancing the coating finish while delivering a positive painting experience. The focus of this paper is optimizing both the intrinsic hiding and paint rheology to achieve the maximum applied hiding for a given formulation. Film characterization tools and formulation options will be discussed.
