LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I congratulate Adrian Thomas on another excellent paper on adhesion. I must confess that, although I have read thousands of words on adhesion and have even written a few myself, I still find some aspects of adhesion puzzling. However there is no doubt that we would all come unstuck without it! I remember, many, many years ago, gazing at a large area of woodwork, in an SEC site, where the paint was cracking and flaking very badly. I was with a Defence Research Scientist at the time. He said "Well, there is no doubt about this failure - the adhesion has failed". I thought to myself "I can see why he is a Research Scientist and I am a mere Experimental Officer." Perhaps Adrian's next paper should deal with some famous adhesion failures. Anyway, thanks Adrian, you have made a major contribution to our understanding of adhesion.
